Suggested Reading

This list omits some very obvious titles for a number of reasons, most likely because I simply have not gotten copies of some very recent publications, or of recently revised editions of older works. No attempt has been made to track availability or pricing.

Titles appearing in blue text within the following list are linked to expanded descriptions farther down this page. While this pertains to only a few volumes at the moment, I plan to give further discussion to many more of these volumes as time permits. Comments suggesting corrections or additions to this list are welcome at brill@pearlfishpress.com or via postal mail.

The Killifishes: An Annotated Checklist , Synonymy, and Bibliography of Recent Oviparous Cyprinodontiform Fishes [Killifish Master Index, Fourth Edition], Kenneth J. Lazara, Ph.D. (in press). American Killifish Association, Mishawaka, IN.
The "KMI" is a comprehensive overview of killifish taxonomy, with an exhaustive synonymy and bibliography. Ken Lazara has been chairman of the AKA's Nomenclature Committee since the late 1970s, and since that time has worked obsessively to maintain an up-to-date database reflecting the state of the art in killifish systematics. With the third edition of this work published in 1984, this revision has been long awaited. The intervening period has seen an enormous amount of activity in the area of killifish taxonomy (for example, most of what you always thought was in Cynolebias is now contained in several genera). Since few killifish hobbyists likely make a practice of keeping up with the relevant scientific literature, these developments typically trickle down to fishkeepers in bits and pieces by word of mouth. So, while this is an ostensibly scientific work, it is nevertheless of great value to hobbyists. And even those with no interest in the more arcane aspects of taxonomy will find useful the ability to check spellings, authors and dates of descriptions, literature citations, etc. The field of fish taxonomy being the interpretive science that it is, no particular systematic overview will ever achieve universal consensus; there will always be individuals or groups that will disagree with the taxonomy and/or nomenclature put forth in this volume. But as an informed and authoritative perspective from which to extrapolate, this is an invaluable resource. There's talk of some portion of the KMI being put on-line, but so far nothing is definite. I'm hoping that the AKA can be persuaded to put the entire systematic section on-line, to be updated on a continual basis. That would be awesome.

A World of Killies (multiple volumes), Rudolf H. Wildekamp. American Killifish Association, Mishawaka, IN, 1993; 1995; 1996, et seq. Pagination variable.
Proposed as a five-volume work, the first three of which have been published to date, this is an extremely fruitful undertaking by the American Killifish Association. For the past twenty-five years Wildekamp has been one of the world's most productive and respected killifish specialists--a prolific writer, researcher, collector, photographer, and illustrator. Unfortunately, these volumes contain no photographs (except for a single plate that precedes the title page), with each text entry instead accompanied by one of Wildekamp's exquisite line drawings (note: if the Pearlfish Press logo looks familiar, I didn't steal it--he's letting me use it). Each species is treated separately, with indexed data on meristic and other physical characters, distribution, captive maintenance and propagation, as well as a range map. Given the scope of the collective work, the text entries are expectantly brief and to the point. Anyone with a professed interest in killifishes should buy each of these volumes as they're made available.

Killfishes of the World (multiple volumes), Lothar Seegers, A.C.S. [Aqualog], MorfendenWaldorf [Germany], 1997; 1997; 2000.
By way of introduction, Seegers offers but a paragraph or two of narrative text on each genus represented in a particular volume. Otherwise, each volume comprises a collection of color photographs of most (but not all) species contained in these genera, accompanied by symbols denoting aspects of behavior and captive care. The photographs are small (eight to a page at one-column width), and vary in quality depending on what was available to the author. Seegers is himself an excellent fish photographer, and where necessary he has borrowed wisely from some of the better photographers working with killifishes, so the image quality is generally very high. The few exceptions are easy to take, as they usually illustrate fishes rarely seen alive by killifish enthusiasts, such as Cyprinodon inmemoriam, Millerichthys robustus, Fluviphylax zonatus, and more than a half dozen species of Orestias--all of this in the last volume alone. Since each species is usually represnted by multiple photographs (typically showing both sexes), these books are especially good for identification and for illustrating phenotypic variation. Polytypic species such as Fundulus chrysotus, Rivulus punctatus, and most Aphyosemion species are especially well served by such treatment. These are beautiful books that should appeal to anyone with an interest in killifishes.

A Fieldguide to Freshwater Fishes, North America, North of Mexico (Peterson Field Guide), Lawrence M. Page and Brooks M. Burr. 1991. Houghton Mifflin, Boston. 432pp; 47 plates; 377 maps.
If native fish enthusiasts don't refer to this book as the "bible," they should. It's a comprehensive (at the time of publication, at least) treatment of freshwater North American fishes. Most of the species are depicted in excellent drawings (some black-and-white, most color), and all are represented with range maps. As would be expected for a field guide, the text is concise and emphasizes salient identifying characters. The design and layout of the text are elegantly simple. Every aspect of this modest book is so well executed that its simply a joy to use, the net result of which is a dog-eared softcover copy really quickly. I suggest getting a softcover edition to throw in your briefcase or glove compartment and a hardbound copy for your library shelf (you won't see the hardcover in store stock, but you should be able to order one). My gripe with most guides to "freshwater fishes," is the exclusion of certain euryhaline fishes, primarily killifishes, many of which inhabit waters of very low salinity, and which may be expected as frequent strays in fresh water, or which may even comprise separate populations confined to fresh water. Page and Burr at least list these species in the beginning of the book, although even some of these would be better treated in the main text.(e.g., Fundulus heteroclitus, the northern subspecies of which is known to exist in isolated freshwater populations).

The Fishes of Tennessee, David A. Etnier and Wayne C. Starnes. 1993. The University of Tennessee Press, Knoxville. 681pp.
Weighing in at over seven pounds, this is the paradigmatic state fish book, moreover, from a state especially well endowed with freshwater fishes. Beautifully designed and printed 8.5"x11" pages cover more than three hundred species, typically with both sexes depicted in color photographs and accompanied by range maps and a comprehensive text. Many darters are shown in breeding coloration, and additonal nice touches include detailed drawings of diagnostic characters (such as ictalurid pectoral spines) and a page depicting the juvenile stages of eleven species of Lepomis. Introductory chapters cover a wide range of topics, including an historical overview of ichthyology in Tennessee, piscine structure and function, taxonomy, collecting and preserving fishes, identification, plus a key to Tennessee fishes.

Fishes of Arkansas, Henry W. Robison and Thomas M. Buchanan. 1988. The University of Arkansas Press, Fayetteville. 536pp.
This is another beautifully done, large format state book that deserves mention. More than two hundred species are treated with an informative narrative text, photographs, distribution maps, and keys. The fish images include excellent laboratory photographs as well as William Roston's remarkable photographs of fishes in their natural habitats. There are also many color photographs of habitats (terrestrial views) interspersed throughout the book. Ancillary chapters and an appendix cover an historical overview of ichthyology in Arkansas, biotopes and environmental concerns, family keys, and identification and preservation of specimens. There is also a glossary.

Marine Fishes of Tropical Australia and South-east Asia, Gerry Allen. 1997. Western Australia Museum, Perth. 292pp. This is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful books I've ever seen. Although not listed as co-authors, artists Roger Swainston and Jill Ruse have produced one of the most impressive collections of color drawings ever published in a single work: Nearly two thousand meticulously detailed, anatomically accurate hand-painted illustrations depicting more than sixteen hundred individual species. All of this is not to detract from Gerry Allen's informative texts, which take the form of concise entries consistent with a field guide format. The book's purview is not really as limited as the title might imply, since many popular marine fishes originate from these waters. Practical considerations aside, however, this book will be revered by anyone who enjoys looking at fishes. My only complaint: A book this nice should be available in hardcover. (If I can find a Website, I'll post a link; for now, query: Western Australia Museum Bookshop, James Street, Perth 6000, Western Australia).
